REDMOND Bill Gates stapt op als topman van het computerbedrijf Microsoft.Gates wil zich voortaan gaan wijden aan het ontwerpen van nieuwe software.Hij blijft wel aan als voorzitter van het concern,liet hij donderdagavond weten.
Gates draagt het roer over aan Steve Ballmer,de huidige president en nummer twee van het computerbedrijf.
Onduidelijk is of de verrassende stap iets te maken heeft met het proces dat momenteel loopt tegen Microsoft wegens misbruik van zijn monopolie.Bill Gates leidde Microsoft sinds de oprichting in 1975.Hij maakte het bedrijf tot het grootste computerfirma ter wereld. He announced the news at a press conference this afternoon in Redmond, Wash.
The surprise announcement comes a day after news leaked that the Department of Justice is proposing a breakup of Microsoft to help resolve the antitrust case pending against the company.
Gates also said in a statement that Ballmer will become a member of the Microsoft board of directors Jan. 27. Gates indicated that he waited until after the release of Windows 2000 before making the change.
